Dahlia Breakout
Dahlia Breakout
- Dahlias love warm weather. Plant your tubers once Spring has officially arrived and the minimum temperatures are above 8°C.
- Prepare your soil beforehand by adding amendments such as bonemeal and an all purpose organic fertilizer and compost.
- Dig a hole just large enough for your tuber or clump. Make sure it is deep enough to cover your tuber with at least 5-8cm of soil.
- Plant your tuber with the eye facing upwards or with the crown and neck closest to soil surface. Make sure to fill in around the tuber with soil. Make sure there is about 30cm spacing on all sides to allow the tuber to grow.
- Water thoroughly to settle the soil, make sure the soil is wet enough to stay moist for a while. Only water again when you see the first growth appear above the soil.
- Dahlias are very thirsty and can easily be irrigated every day in well drained soils when flowering and at the height of summer. If you notice flowers becoming smaller, water more often. Be sure to give a deep soaking every 3rd day.
- To get the most out of your dahlias, fertilize with a low-nitrogen fertilizer (N<P:K ratio). Fertilize after sprouting and then every 3- 4 weeks from mid-summer until early autumn.

Harden off your seedling by moving them outside for a few hours everyday for +- 1 week prior to planting them out in the garden. Remember to bring them back inside at night.
